Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia is the world’s greatest Men’s singles badminton player in the past decade. He holds the record for longest reign as undefeated world champion (315 weeks) and since 2008 he holds 3 consecutive Olympic silver medals. May 2012 during the Thomas cup he severely injured his ankle and the countless experts around him stood helplessly by. Under desperate circumstances 10 days before the Olympic Entry deadline, Lee Chong Wei limped to Jim Liu knowing it was his only hope. Only 6 treatments later Jim Liu sent Lee Chong Wei on his way to the podium!

Jim Liu’s Diagnosis for Lee Chong Wei: Weakness in the leg due to a herniated lumbar disc caused the ankle injury. The herniated lumbar disc is the real culprit that instigated the leg weakness and thus ankle instability followed. Less than 30 minutes into the first treatment, Lee Chong Wei went from having difficulty walking to being able to jump up and down. After the second treatment he was able to return to training. In the 6 treatments, Jim Liu also eradicated many of Lee Chong Wei’s previous latent injuries accumulated from years of intensive training. These hidden injuries are the reason why many fit world-class athletes have trouble with things as simple as walking. Lee Chong Wei’s injuries were not limited to his ankle, there were hidden injuries on his back, waist, legs, and even on his spine.

These treatments not only allowed him to enter the Olympics but in such a short period of time returned him to his peak physical state. He easily defeated Chen Long and various other badminton stars. Lee Chong Wei made it to the final stage and lost the last set by only 2 points to his old rival Lin Dan.

Jim Liu used 6 treatments to turn Lee Chong Wei from a deflated athlete who couldn’t even walk and was considering retirement into that year’s Olympic silver medalist. He also took silver at the next Olympic Games and subsequently returned to his position at the top of the world. Without Jim Liu, Lee Chong Wei would be absent from the Olympic Games 2012 onward.

Special notes:

Although it only took 6 treatments to return Lee Chong Wei to peak condition and completely erase the leg injury that plagued him for months, we did not have enough time (due to the beginning of the Olympic Games and the departure of the Malaysian national team to Australia for closed training) to address the other issues we discovered in clinic. We had diagnosed him with various other conditions affecting his vision, cervical spine, shoulder, and thoracic vertebrae. He had many latent injuries left behind from the numerous years of intense training. These issues do not manifest with obvious acute symptoms however if they were treated, his reaction, mental clarity, speed, endurance, flexibility, explosive power, agility, and overall physical state would benefit greatly. He would then be able to maintain his position at the top of the world for many years to come.

The outcome of badminton, as with any other sport at the international level, is highly dependent on the athlete’s injuries. In other words, the athlete with fewer injuries will win over an athlete with more injuries or ill-timed relapses. The dormant injuries we found on Lee Chong Wei are commonplace on essentially every badminton athlete. We removed many of these injuries thus giving him an edge against his peers. This is a big factor behind Lee Chong Wei’s long reign at the top of the international badminton leader boards.
