Interview of Soon Hock Ong (famous Men’s Double Badminton player in Malaysia)—osteonecrosis

Introduction to Soon Hock Ong. It all started on December 24th, 2005. For the first 5 months I endured the pain and played through it but then the pain became too much, I couldn’t play badminton at all. I wanted to make a big break into the world, however because of my health my rank in the world dropped from the top 10 to oblivion.

The national team arranged for me to receive medical treatment starting from my first episode. But I never felt even 50% better after the treatments. I could not lift my hand at all and I couldn’t even feed myself. Sleep was difficult too, I could not lay down normally, had abnormal neck pain, slept very little, and my chest deflated. I saw many specialists that the national team referred to regularly. I took many MRI’s in a short amount of time, also endured bone marrow tests, and yet not a single doctor could figure out what was wrong. The more they treated me the worse I became, the more I struggled. They argued for a very long time between themselves until finally concluding that a virus had invaded my nervous system. None of them could cure me, and their reasoning was that surgery was too dangerous. They only gave me antibiotics. My health continued to deteriorate, my arms, shoulders, and collarbones were all radiating pain as if electricity was passing through. They were sore and tight. My neck was compressed and I couldn’t lift it at all. Then the doctors began to speculate if perhaps I had bone cancer. They carried out spot checks. I began to feel hopeless. Even more frightening is that my toes were beginning to shrink. It looked like all that was left of my toes were bones covered by a thin layer of skin. Putting on shoes was very painful.

August of 2006, Dr. Liu came to specifically help me. In about ten days, I had just about fully recovered. In a single treatment my neck was fine, I could lift my head and also fall asleep with no pain. I could also raise my arm up high and it felt stronger. All that pain I felt disappeared, my chest, neck, and toes and many other muscles that had deteriorated were slowly growing back. After Dr. Liu treated me, I quickly resumed training. In January 2007 I entered the Malaysian Open and successfully defeated the reigning world champion Chinese team Fu Hai Feng and Cai Yun. Dr. Liu is my mentor and my savior.
